Blogger's Quilt Festival 2009

Amy at Park City Girl is hosting an online Quilt Festival.

Here is my quilt that I am entering. I am actually still working on hand-sewing the binding on this quilt, but I am very happy with how it has turned out so far. I made a little bitty practice quilt to practice my free-motion quilting, but this is my first "full-size" quilt to do it on. I had major issues with the thread breakind, but got it done. This quilt is for someone who just graduated from college - her favorite color is blue. My mom helped me cut and sew the quilt top together. I'm hoping to get this done by the end of October, just got to get all that binding done. For those of you who hand-bind your quilts, do you use a thimble? My fingers are already hurting and I'm not even a quarter of the way done. Would love your tips. Thanks for stopping by!

beautiful colors. In answer to your question, I hand piece as well as hand quilt and have never used a thimble. (I don't have a sewing machine and have never used one.)

I've always found thimbles to be annoying. Of course, whenever I sew through anything super thick, it kills my fingers (and my nails, since I tend to cheat and use them to push through). Not sure what the answer is. : /

You are super awesome! It is looking great. Good job. Dude, what are you entering it in? Or like what is an online quilt show? I'm sorry your fingers are hurting, it's looks great, just tihnk how awesome it will be in the end, just a little pain, but an amazing work when finished :D

Very beautiful quilt!
I do a lot of hand piecing and quilting, and the only thimble I can really work with is the coin thimble from clover. It is from leather with a little metal "coin" in it. It fits to the finger very good and can not slip off. I love it!!!

When I was in college, taking clothing and textile classes, our professor told us if we didn't learn how to use a thimble she'd give us an F. I learned how very quickly, but it was a hard habit initially to get used to. Now I can't sew without one.

I like the old cheezy silver thimbles, trying them on in the store to get one that slips on and off easily, but is not too big. If your fingers get hot, pick up the next thimble (of course you have two) and it's nice and cool to the touch.

Whenever I'm at sewing group and don't have my thimble, I go home with pokes in all my fingertips--ouch!

Very cute quilt (and cute blog, too!). Have fun quilting!

Lovely quilt! And you did a lovely job of the quilting too!

For the whole two quilts I have made, I did not use a thimble, but I did get sore fingers. I do sometimes use a needle grip to pull the needle through when it gets difficult (purchased after chipping my teeth on the needle).

That looks great! I love blue and yellow together! The quilt I entered into the festival was blue and yellow too.

I use a little leather thimble, it's less bulky than a metal one so it feels more natural to me to use it. :)
